The state of Texas is the second most populous and the second most extensive of the 50 states of the United States of America. Texas borders Mexico and the Gulf of Mexico in the South Central United States.
The Republic of Texas joined the United States as the 28th state on December 29, 1845. Texas joined the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War from 1861 to 1865, but was readmitted to the Union in 1870.

The state of Florida is the fourth most populous and the southeasternmost of the 50 states of the United States of America. Florida lies between the Gulf of Mexico and the North Atlantic Ocean.
The Territory of Florida joined the Union as the 27th state on March 3, 1845. Florida joined the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War from 1861 to 1865, but was readmitted to the Union in 1868.

The state of California is the most populous and the third most extensive of the 50 states of the United States of America. California is home to Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, and Sacramento, respectively the 2nd, 6th, 17th, and 23rd most populous metropolitan areas of the United States. California borders the North Pacific Ocean and Baja California in the Southwestern United States. California includes both Mount Whitney, the highest (4421 m) mountain peak in the contiguous United States, and Death Valley, the lowest (-86 m) and hottest (56.7°C) place in North America.
Pedro Fages Beleta established El Presidio Reál de San Diego for Spain on May 14, 1769. California became a part of the newly independent Mexico with the Treaty of Córdoba signed on August 24, 1821. The United States declared war on Mexico on May 13, 1846. American forces seized Alta California and Mexican partisans surrendered with the Treaty of Cahuenga signed on January 13, 1847. James W. Marshall discovered gold at Sutter's Mill on January 24, 1848, precipitating the California Gold Rush. Mexico formally ceded Alta California to the United States with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo signed on February 2, 1848. California joined the Union as the 31st state on September 9, 1850.
